Willie L Emery - burial

Willie, L Emery, the 5th child born to my great great great grandparents, Sarah (Dwire) and David W Emery was born sometime in 1863 or 1864 in Galva, Henry county, Illinois.   Over a year after the Emery family moved to Ottumwa, Wapello county, Iowa, Willie passed away on September 17, 1871 and was buried at the Ottumwa Cemetery.

Here is a photo of his tombstone, though the lettering is no longer legible.

Were it not for the map provided by the cemetery no one would know who was represented by his monument.    The map was posted a couple of weeks ago and can be found here.

John F Emery - Civil War records

Here is an additional document that provides more details on the injuries sustained during the Civil War by John F Emery, the son Olive (Jacobs) and Henry Emery.

Apparently John had spent some time at Battle Springs Mountain Sanitarium in Hot Springs, South Dakota due to his injuries.   This explains why he was not listed as living with his wife, Phoebe during the 1900 US Census.

Fred J Emery - obituary

My great great grandfather, Fred J Emery passed away on November 2, 1906 in Ottumwa, Wapello county, Iowa.    Below is his obituary from the November 3, 1906 edition of the Ottumwa Courier.

Fred was born to Sarah (Dwire) and David W Emery on April 23, 1866 in Galva, Henry county, Illinois.   His first marriage to my great great grandmother, Abigail Williams occurred in Washington, Iowa on July 3, 1887.

Abigail and Fred had three children,  my great grandfather, Fred Owen Emery (last name changed to Daniels sometime in the early 1900's), Alice Mabel Emery and Frank Raymond Emery.    For unknown reasons, sometime most likely in 1895, Abigail and Fred divorced and Fred married a second time to May Morrell on May 13, 1899 in Marshalltown, Iowa on May 13, 1899.

Unfortunately, Fred's obituary did not mention his children or first wife Abigail (Williams) nor the name of his second wife.

1895 Iowa Census - David W Emery

Here is the 1895 Iowa Census (a very poor quality microfilm) for my great great great grandparents, Sarah (Dwire) and David W Emery.

Page 2 (below) lists their marital status, profession  and religion.

Sarah and David were living in Ottumwa, Center township, Wapello county, Iowa with their children, Fred (my great great grandfather), Bert, Clyde, Clark, Ben and Georgia.

According to this census, Bert was divorced at the time.  He married his second wife, Margaret McDowell 5 years later on April 10, 1900.

My great great grandmother, Abigail (Williams), David's first wife, had married her second husband in July 1895 so it's possible David J Emery may have been in the process of his divorce by the time the census was taken.   It states Fred was 29 so I assume the census was taken after April 23, 1866, the date of his birthday.
