Fred Daniels and Audrey Clarke - marriage

Here is a newspaper article announcing the marriage of Fred and Mabel Daniels' son, Fred Daniels Jr to Audrey Clark on March 27, 1943 in Pasadena, California.

Fred Sr had passed away 5 1/2 years earlier and never saw his son get married.

Fred Daniels & Terminal Garage, Chicago, Illinois - Goodyear advertisement

While trying to locate a photograph of my great grandfather's business, Terminal Garage, I stumbled upon this advertisement from Goodyear (note the size of the tires encompassing the earth).

The ad included several owners of the various businesses selling Goodyear products, and my great grandfather was included.   This is the first photo I've ever seen of him.

Below is Fred Daniels' photo, which appears on page 2 of the advertisement for Terminal Garage.

Fred Daniels, Inc stationery

Here is the stationery my great grandfather Fred Daniels used for the Terminal Garage in Chicago.

I do not know if he also had stationery for the Daniels Apartment Hotel; I've only seen the postcard.

Map of the Daniels Apartment Hotel and Terminal Garage

Here is a map of driving directions (in purple) from my great grandfather Fred Daniels' Terminal Garage which was located at 4464 N Broadway in Chicago to the Daniels Apartment Hotel at 4618 N Winthrop.

The driving directions are 6/10ths of a mile, but to walk it appears to be less than 4/10th's of a mile.

The map below is from 1921.

Daniels Apartment Hotel murder

Before my great grandparents lost the Daniels Apartment Hotel due to the Great Depression, a murder of one of the residents took place in the hotel lobby by her boyfriend on August 4, 1934.

This probably didn't help the stress level of my great grandparents as they faced difficulties associated with the economic times of the 1930's.

Daniels Apartment Hotel bonds

I mentioned in a previous post that my great grandparents sold bonds in order to finance the construction of the Daniels Apartment Hotel located at 4718 Winthrop Avenue in Chicago.

Here is a copy of the advertisement, though it doesn't mention the name of the project, the photo depicted clearly is the same as the postcard photograph.

Louise Mary Daniels - birth certificate and register

Here is the birth certificate for my grandmother, Louise Mary Daniels, born April 19, 1914 to Mabel (Cass) and Fred Daniels in Chicago, Illinois.

The family was living at 4647 Winthrop Avenue,  a block south of where they would eventually build the Daniels Apartment Hotel.

Cook County, Illinois also had a birth register.   Louise is listed as number 4024 on page 1 of the register, along with the birth location and age of the father and mother.

Page 2 of the register lists the mother's maiden name, the father's name and profession.  The last column is the name of the doctor.

Fred J Emery family tree

I added a second tab for the family tree of Fred J Emery, my great great grandfather.    This tree includes the subsequent three generations.

Fred Daniels - World War I draft registration

Here is the World War I draft registration for my great grandfather, Fred Owen Emery Daniels.      Fred was the general manager at the Terminal Garage Company located at 4964 Broadway, Chicago, Illinois.   When I was there a couple of years ago, the building no longer existed and was just a vacant parking lot for an abandoned Aldi supermarket.

It was this document that helped point me in the right direction as to where to look to confirm he was born into the Emery family.

Daniels Apartment Hotel - Chicago, Illinois

Here is a postcard of the Apartment Hotel my great grandparent's, Fred and Mabel Daniels built in Chicago during the 1920's.

Unfortunately the building no longer exists; I believe it was torn down sometime in the 1970's.   When I was there a couple of years ago,  it was just an empty lot.

Here is the 1920 US Census for Fred Daniels, wife Mable and their two children Fred Jr and Louise.

Unlike in 1930, the family was living at Leland Avenue in Chicago and had two lodgers.

The Emery / Daniels family tree clarification

I'm starting to discover that many of the family trees available online have confused David and Sarah Emery living in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa during the mid to late 1800's with another David and Sarah Emery, also living in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa.

One David Emery was an attorney, with a middle initial of "H".

My family's David Emery was a carpenter, with a middle initial of "W".

I will be posting documentation of my family to confirm the correct family members and will be also be correcting any errors in the family tree I've posted on the right hand margin.

1930 US Census - Fred Daniels

In 1930, Fred Daniels, wife Mable and their two children, Fred Jr and Louise were living at 4718 Winthrop Avenue in Chicago,  Illinois.

4718 Winthrop Avenue was the location of the Daniels Apartment Hotel that my great grandfather had built which he financed by selling bonds.    He eventually lost the building during the "Great Depression".

In addition to owning the hotel, he was a manager of a garage located on Broadway, also in Chicago.    I have photos of that building which I will post at a later time.

Fred's wife Mabel is listed as a hotel manager, which would have been the Daniels Apartment Hotel.

Fred Owen Emery Daniels death certificate

Here is the Cook County, Illinois death certificate for my great grandfather, Fred Owen Emery Daniels.    He was only 49 when he passed away of a heart attack on October 22, 1937 in Chicago.

Fred was buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.

Fred's wife, Mabel provided the personal information found on the death certificate.   Mabel apparently did not know the correct name of her father-in-law or where he was born.   The name looks like Willis or Wilkes Daniels though Wilson Daniels was Fred's step-father.   The the place of birth was Iowa, which was correct as he was born in Washington County, Iowa.

His father was Fred J Emery, born in Galva, Illinois.     His mother was Abigail Williams, born in Iowa, though I do not know the name of the city.

Fred Owen Emery changed his name to Fred Emery Daniels sometime prior to his marriage in 1910, but as far as I know, his father never changed his last name from Emery to Daniels.

The Emery / Daniels family tree

On the right margin is a family tree of the Emery / Daniels family*.

(Scroll down for the first entry, Johann Heinrich Emery in column "A" at line 25; scroll to the right for additional generations where I end the tree at column "J".)

Columns "A" - "F" is data from other sources that I have yet to verify. I will update the tree as I come across confirming documentation. Documents will be posted as a blog entry, but access to the family tree will always be on the right hand margin, just by clicking the word "tree".

Columns "G" - "J" is based upon my own research and personal knowledge.

*My great grandfather was born an Emery but changed his name to Daniels sometime prior to 1910 - see column "H".

There may be a few typos and errors, which I will correct as I am searching for documentation.
