Fred Owen (Emery) Daniels - death

Last year, I had posted the death certificate of my great grandfather, Fred Daniels.    Here is a simple transcription of vital information culled from the death certificate.

In reviewing the original death certificate I had not previously noted that he had been working at the Terminal Garage in Chicago since 1910.     While in Chicago I did not pursue the documents related to the garage, but I believe it had been built prior to Fred's involvement in the business.

Terminal Garage - 4464 Broadway, Chicago, Illinois

Last year I had posted a photo from 2007 of the location of the Terminal Garage, owned by Fred Daniel, my great grandfather.    At the time, the property was a parking lot and an abandoned Aldi's supermarket.  Since then, a Target has been built.   Here is a photo taken this summer of the approximate location of 4464 Broadway.

Here is a photo looking north of Montrose on the western side of Broadway.

If you compare these photos with the photo from 1926 you can see the original building on the northwest corner of Montrose and Broadway still stands and a condominium building was build on top.

At the north end of the block, Wilson at Broadway, the McJunkin building still stands.

According to newspaper accounts, a fire occurred at the Arcadia ballroom in January 1959 and was torn down in 1960.   It was may have been at this time that the Terminal Garage, which was located next to the Arcadia ballroom was also torn down.

Terminal Garage - 1926

Last year I had posted the only photo in our family's possession of the business, Terminal Garage owned by Fred Daniels, my great grandfather.

Here is a photo from 1926 showing the western side of 4464 Broadway in Chicago.    Montrose is the southern end of the block and Wilson is the northern end.

Terminal Garage was located just north of the Arcadia Ballroom.  You can barely make out the "Garage" sign.     Below is a closeup.

Daniels Apartment Hotel - location

Here is photo from August of 2011 of the lot located at 4718 Winthrop Avenue, Chicago, Illinois where my great grandfather's building, the Daniels Apartment Hotel once stood.

The building to the left is 4716, then the lot for the Daniels Apartment Hotel at 4718 and another lot, 4722.  The building to the right is 4726 Winthrop Avenue.

If you compare the photo from yesterday to the photo from 2007 that was posted last year, you can see that the building at 4722 was torn down sometime after 2007.

Daniels Apartment Hotel

I had posted last year the postcard my great grandfather, Fred Daniels had used for the Daniels Apartment Hotel.    I do not know why my grandmother did not have any photos of the building so while in Chicago, after some extensive research, I was able to track down the original photo used for the postcard.

This may be the only photo in existence today.    After locating an employee of a previous owner, I was informed that the building was torn down probably in the mid-1980's, possibly between October 1984 and October 1986.

Daniels Apartment Hotel - Building permits

Five years after acquiring the property located at 4718 Winthrop Avenue in Chicago, my great grandfather Fred (Emery) Daniels had begun the process to build the Daniels Apartment Hotel.   Here are the building permits dated March 18, 1925.

The permit above was found at the University of Chicago archives.   The permit below was located at the Chicago Historical society.   Both index cards indicate the owner information was missing from the microfilm.

I attempted to obtain the original plans, but according to the city of Chicago, nothing exists prior to 1956.

Sarah (Dwire) Emery - obituary

Here is the obituary* of my great great great grandmother, Sarah Emery.

Sarah was born to Lacey and Ellis Dwire in Fulton County, Illinois on June 3, 1837.   Sarah married David W Emery sometime in 1853 or 1854, probably near Galva, Henry county, Illinois.   Because counties were not required to record vital information until after 1916, I've been unable to locate their marriage license.
