Alice Mabel (Emery) Holder Mitchell - 3rd marriage

Alice Mabel (Emery) Holder Mitchell, second child of my great great grandparents, Abigail (Williams) and Fred J Emery married for a third time to Durland Wadsworth Brown.   They married on September 7, 1920 in Lake County, Indiana.

The first marriage of Alice Mabel Emery with Fred Colby Holder Jr ended in divorce around 1909.  Her second marriage to Charles Francis Mitchell ended in divorce sometime prior to her marriage to Durland.  I have yet to find divorce information between Alice Mabel (Emery) Holder Mitchell Brown and Durland Wadsworth Brown.

Alice Mabel Emery Holder Mitchell Brown - 1930 residence

I thought I had possibly tracked down the 1930 US Census for Alice Mabel Emery Holder Mitchell Brown.    I have doubts that my theory of a marriage between Alice Mabel Emery to a Stogstill are correct.    Also having been married multiple times makes it difficult as I do not know which last name she used at any given time.    She also used her middle name often eliminating the first name which creates another issue.   It is interesting that Mabel used her first husband's last name after divorces from her subsequent marriages.

I did find a phone directory for 1930 listing Mabel Holder living at 4718 Winthrop Avenue, Chicago which was the Daniels Apartment hotel owned by her brother, Fred (Emery) Daniels.

Mabel's entry is on the left side, 3rd column midway down the page.

Here is a closeup of the entry:

The Illinois Bell Telephone company directory was labeled 'Summer Telephone Directory'.  For reference, the 1930 US Census for the Daniels Apartment Hotel, taken April 7th did not list Mabel as a resident*.    It's possible Mabel moved into the building after the census and prior to the publishing of the phone directory.

*The additional (15) residents listed were on the next page of the census.  I did not post the additional census page.

Alice Mabel (Emery) Holder Mitchell Brown and Dorothy June (Holder) Turnbull - burial

Alice Mabel Emery, second child of my great great grandparents, Abigail (Williams) and Fred J Emery was born in Washington, Iowa on November 27, 1889.

Alice's first marriage was to Fred Colby Holder Jr on August 10, 1907 in Chicago, Illinois.   That marriage produced a daughter,  Dorothy June Holder on June 18, 1908.

Sometime in 1909, Alice and Fred Holder divorced.     Following her divorce from Fred Holder, Alice married Charles F Mitchell on September 14, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois.

Alice was married a third time to Durland Wadsworth Brown on September 9, 1920, also in Chicago.    If there were any other marriages I have not been able to locate them, though Alice did use her first husband's last name at the time of her death.

Alice passed away on May 14, 1970 in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois and was cremated.    The death certificate indicates the ashes were laid to rest at Graceland cemetery in Chicago.

Alice's only daughter, Dorothy June Holder married Alexander Tayler Turnbull in 1928 or 1929.    Alexander was the first child born to Marcia Dorothea (Wood) and Alexander Tayler Turnbull Sr  on June 4, 1903 in Chicago.

Dorothy passed away August 10, 1995 in Glenview, Cook county, Illinois.   Alexander Turnbull Jr passed away in October 1975, also in Glenview, Illinois.

Here is a photo of the sign located at the entrance to Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.

Here is the cemetery map.

The Turnbull's were buried in Section G, Lot 555, plot 57.

Here is the map for Plot 57.

Here is a photo of the Turnbull plot.

Here is a photo of the marker for Alice Mabel (Emery) Holder Mitchell Brown, daughter June and son-in-law Alexander as well as his father, Alexander Turnbull Sr.

1920 US Census - Alice Mabel Emery Holder

I finally located the 1920 US Census for Alice Mabel Emery, the sister my great grandfather Fred Owen Emery Daniels.    Alice was using her first husband's name, "Holder" rather than her second husband's name of "Mitchell".

I know I have the correct census record because it the very next page following her brother, Fred Daniel's census record.    Both Fred and sister Alice were living on Leland Avenue in Chicago.   Also, the occupation matches the same as what was listed under her mother's census for 1920, that of a bookkeeper.

I still haven't located the 1910 or 1930 US Census for Alice Mabel Emery Holder Mitchell.

Alice Mabel Emery Holder Mitchell - marriage

Here is the marriage certificate for the second marriage of Abigail (Williams) and Fred J Emery's daughter, Alice Mabel Emery.

Here is the marriage certificate for her first marriage to Fred Colby Holder Jr.    I've attempted to locate corroborating documentation but have come up empty handed.   I note the second marriage states "Mrs" rather than "Miss" Mabel Holder, so it's likely to belong to Alice Mabel Emery.

Fred C Holder Jr

While searching for the descendants of Alice Mabel Emery (the sister of my great grandfather, Fred Owen Emery Daniels), I was able to locate documents relating to her first husband, Fred C Holder Jr.

I reviewed the 1910 US Census I had posted previously, which indicated Fred had been married for 2 years, yet his wife was not listed as living in the household.   I'm not sure whether that is an error and Alice Mabel (Emery) Holder was mistakenly omitted or whether she was living elsewhere in 1910.

I stumbled upon Fred Holder's passport application from 1918 which contains some information about Fred.

He had remarried and had been living in Australia, employed for an Australian company.   He had previously worked for Swift and Company in Chicago.   This confirms I had the correct Fred Holder for the 1910 US Census which indicated Fred was employed by a packing company.

Never having seen a photo of Fred, a passport application is a great source.  Fred's photo is shown on each page of the application.

The passport application also confirms Fred's father was Fred Christopher Holder.

I then located a passenger list for the SS Sonoma which sailed on February 11, 1920 from Sydney, Australia and arrived in San Francisco on March 1st (or 6th) which included the name of Fred's second wife, Wanda and their son, Forrest.

Further research led me to a marriage register for Wanda (Cox) and Fred Holder, who were married January 9, 1915 in Berrien County, Michigan.

Apparently the marriage of Alice Mabel Emery and Fred C Holder Jr lasted less than 8 years.

Alice Mabel Emery, Fred C Holder Jr - death certificate and Fred C Holder Jr 1910 US Census

Here is the Cook County death certificate for my great grandfather, Fred Daniels' sister, Alice Mabel (Emery) Holder.

Alice died on May 14, 1970 in Chicago.    The death certificate indicates she was a widow, which brings up some questions regarding her husband, Fred C Holder Jr's death certificate.

According to Fred's death certificate, he was a widow at the time of his death on April 18, 1956 in Mineral Wells, Colorado.     Based upon this information, one would come to the conclusion that Alice and Fred had divorced.   Fred then re-married and his second wife preceded him in death.

Another unanswered question is why the 1910 US Census did not include Alice and their daughter Dorothy as part of the Holder household (lines 18 - 21).

The first records I have found for Dorothy Holder are the 1920 US Census.   I've been able to locate the 1910 US Census records for either Dorothy or her mother, Alice Mabel Holder.
