Olive (Jacobs) and Henry Emery - burial

My great great great great grandparents, Olive (Jacobs) and Henry Emery were buried at the Galva Cemetery in Henry County, Illinois.

Olive was born January 6, 1808 in Pennsylvania.   Henry was born January 7, 1802 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania to Edith (Fisher) and David Emery.    Olive and Henry married January 13, 1825, also in Pennsylvania.

Olive died September 26, 1859 in Weller township, Henry County, Illinois.   Henry died November 17, 1875 also in Weller township, Henry County, Illinois.    Here is a photo of the Emery plot.

Here is a photo of the front of the monument.    The inscription states "Our Father and Mother" and below that just above the base, "Emry" which was apparently another spelling of the family name.

The two markers to the right of the Emery (Emry) monument probably stated "Mother" and "Father" at one point, but they are no longer legible.

This one may say "Edith" or "Mother".

This one may say "Henry" or "Father".

1870 US Census - William Patrick Emery, John F Emery, Jason Rust Emery, Elizabeth (Emery) Butler, David W Emery, Catherine (Emery) Kelly, Henry & Hannah Emery

Here is the 1870 US Census for the remaining children of Olive (Jacobs) and Henry Emery:

William Patrick Emery, John F Emery, Jason Rust Emery, and Elizabeth (Emery) Butler all living in Highland township, Wapello county, Iowa.

William Patrick Emery was living with wife Margaret and their children, Henry, Mary and Frank.    John F Emery was living next door with wife Phebe and their children Ida and Lottie.    Next to John was sister Elizabeth Butler living with her husband Abia and their children, Ella, Alice Eva and Frank.  Jason Rust Emery apparently was nicknamed "Doc" and was living two houses away from Elizabeth.

I had posted the census for their brother, David W Emery, my great great great grandfather last year as well as my great great great great grandfather Henry Emery and his second wife, Hannah (Gaffney).   I did not know it at the time but Henry and Hannah were living next door to Henry's youngest daughter, Catherine Kelly and her husband William.

1860 US Census - Henry Emery

About a year ago I posted the 1860 US Census for my great great great great grandfather Henry Emery and his second wife, Hannah (Gaffney).    I have located a better copy of the census and have since figured out the other residents of the household.




































The Emery family was living in Weller township, Henry county, Illinois.    Residents of the Emery household are as follows:   Henry, second wife* Hannah (Gaffney), followed by Henry and Olive's second eldest son, James H Emery.   The next two listed were Hannah's children with her first husband (Henry's brother, Frederick Welker Emery) Amanda and John G Emery.   The last four children are also Henry and Olive's children, Sarah, William Patrick, Jason Rust and Catherine Emery.

The listing for Sarah was difficult to decipher as the first name is difficult to read, however, there are no other census listings for Sarah living in another household and her age does match the previous census.    Sarah eventually left the household when she was married three years later to Frank Ferman.

*Henry's first wife, Olive (Jacobs) had passed away the previous year on September 26, 1859.

In addition to the Lincoln/Douglas debate memorials at Knox College, the Galesburg, Illinois train depot has a statue of Abraham Lincoln describing his connection to the town of Galesburg.

I have added an additional tab for the children of Olive (Jacobs) and Henry Emery* (my great great great great grandparents).   As always, the Emery (and Daniels) family tree is located in the right margin.   Just click on the highlighted "tree".

Their daughter, Edith Caroline Emery may have passed away sometime prior to the 1860 US census.   I've encountered some family trees that indicate she married an Ethan Cornwall on April 1, 1850, which is not likely considering that would have meant she married at the age of 11 or 12 if her year of birth of 1838 is correct.    Some of these same family trees have listed a death date of February 4, 1926 in Joliet, Will county, Illinois using the last name of Emery.   Were she to have married, she most likely would have been using her husband's last name at the time of death.

*Hannah (Gaffney) and Henry Emery did not have any children.

Upon the 100th anniversary of the debates, two plaques were placed on either side of the doorway to commemorate the occasion.

Henry Emery - Weller township, Henry County, Illinois property (continued)

Several months ago I posted a plat map as well as a drawing of the property owned by my great great great great grandfather, Henry Emery.

The property was located in Weller township, Henry County, Illinois.    After speaking with a long time neighbor, the corn crib had been taken down sometime before a tornado in the late 1970's came through the area and destroyed the outlying buildings, leaving only the house.     The house was not in very good condition and was demolished in the past decade or so to pave the way for additional farm land for the current owner.

1850 US Non-Population Census

Here is the 1850 US Non-Population Land Census for my 4th great grandfather, Henry Emery (#14 from the bottom) for his property in Joshua, Fulton County, Illinois.

This is where Henry and first wife Olive (Jacobs) had lived until they moved to Weller township, Henry County, Illinois in April 1856.

Henry Emery and daughter Amelia - biography

Here is a short biography about my great great great great grandfather, Henry Emery and one of his daughters, Amelia (Emery) Standard.

This appeared in on page 99 of a book titled, "Documents And Biography Pertaining To The Settlement And Progress, Stark County, Illinois, Containing An Authentic Summary Of Records, Documents, Historical Works And Newspapers........Biography of Representative Men Of The Past and Present" by M. A. Leeson, 1887.

There is one discrepancy in that it indicates Henry moved to Henry county in 1857, though from yesterday's post regarding Henry's property in Weller township, he had purchased the land in 1852.  Unfortunately, the 1855 Illinois census for Henry county is missing.

It also states he was married to his first wife, Olive Jacobs in 1822, though the photo indicates he was married January 13, 1825.  Also, their first child Mary A Emery was born December 30, 1825.

In any event, it's interesting to have some additional information about Henry's life while living in Illinois.

Below is a Map of Illinois indicating Principal Meridians and Baselines which shows the property matches the plat map and legal descriptions.

All the land grants were processed in Washington DC by President Franklin Pierce on July 9, 1853, though the Illinois database indicates the property was acquired on July 1, 1852.    These documents also verify that the plat map incorrectly spelled Henry's last name as "Emry" rather than the correct spelling of "Emery".

Henry Emery - Weller Township, Henry County, Illinois property

Well, the evidence just keeps piling up.    Last year I posted the plat map for the property owned by my great great great great grandfather, Henry Emery.

I found another (color version) of the map which includes the entire eastern portion of Weller township.   Henry's property is in quadrant 28.

























I wasn't 100% confident I had the right Henry Emery, especially since "Emery" was misspelled as "Emry", so I looked up the 1870 US Census and on page 32 (the page following Henry and wife Hannah's census information) and see that Daniel Sunberg, Peter Sunberg and Michael Underwood are listed.  If you look at quadrant 27 on the Weller township plat map, you will see their names and respective properties listed just east of Henry Emery's (Emry) property.

Even more interesting, here is a drawing of my great great great great grandfather's property from US Indexed County Land Ownership Maps, Henry County, Illinois 1875.

Note the train in the upper right corner, which matches the train tracks that cut through the northern portion of Henry's property on the plat map.

Here is a very short biography* of Henry's second wife, Sarah (Gaffney) who had previously been married to Henry's brother, Frederick Welker Emery.

1835 Illinois Census - David Emery, Henry Emery

Here is the 1835 Illinois Census for my great great great great grandfather, Henry Emery (line 20) living in Canton, Fulton County, Illinois.

I also believe his father, David Emery (my great great great great great grandfather) is also on the same census, listed at #15.

The difficulty with this census is it lacks additional names, birth places and dates of birth.  There are several Emery's living in the area, but many could have been cousins, uncles, etc.

Henry Emery and the Abraham Lincoln/Stephen Douglas debates Part II

A couple of weeks ago I posted about my great great great great grandfather Henry Emery and daughter Catherine who had attended the Lincoln/Douglas debate in Galesburg, Illinois.  

Here is an obituary for Henry's daughter Catherine, provided by one of many Emery cousins, Linda Larson. 

While the content is difficult to read, the headline is pretty clear. 

Catherine Emery was born February 14, 1849 in Canton, Illinois and died December 25, 1938.  

She was married to William Kelly on January 12, 1870 near Galva, Illinois.

Henry Emery and the Abraham Lincoln/Stephen Douglas debates

I ran across an interesting article of historical value that stated my great great great great grandfather Henry Emery attended the Lincoln/Douglas debate in Galesburg, Illinois.     His daughter Catherine also attended.

The following day, October 8, 1858, Abraham Lincoln spoke in town;  Henry and Catherine sat directly across the table from Mr Lincoln, the future President of the United States.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find confirmation this actually happened, but the Emery's were living in Henry county, Illinois at the time, which would have been about 26 miles northeast of Galesburg, Illinois where the debate was held.

Olive (Jacobs) and Henry Emery

Here is a photo of my great great great great grandparents Olive (Jacobs) and  Henry Emery.

I'm not sure what year the photo was taken; it had to have been several years* after their wedding which was January 13, 1825.        My guess is that the photo was taken in the 1840's or 1850's.   (Olive died September 26, 1859).

*The first photo taken of a person was in 1839.

Eastern Weller Township, Henry County, Illinois, plat map

The census records have shown that my great great great great grandfather Henry Emery lived in the town of Weller, Henry County, Illinois during the 1860's and 1870's.   

Here is a plat map from 1875 for eastern Weller township, in Henry County, which indicates Weller was not a town, but rather a rural area west of Bishop Hill.

Henry owned 308 acres and the property is found at the red arrow below (between quadrant 28 and 33), though his name has been misspelled as "Emry".

1870 US Census - Henry Emery

Here is the 1870 US Census for my great great great great grandfather Henry Emery still living in the township of Weller, Henry County, Illinois.   Henry was living with his second wife, Hannah (Gaffney) along with someone named Laura, who appears to be 3 years old.  It's not likely Laura was born to Henry and Hannah so I would guess she is probably a niece or granddaughter.

























Update: February 10, 2011

Should have corrected this October 20, 2010 because I had located the 1880 US Census for Hannah, which explained that Laura was her granddaughter.

1865 Illinois Census - Henry Emery

Here is the 1865 mid-decade Illinois Census for my great great great great grandfather Henry Emery (19th row).

Unfortunately this census is not only difficult to read, but it fails to list the members of the household, other than the number living at the home.

1860 US Census - Henry Emery

Here is the 1860 US Census for my great great great great grandfather Henry Emery and his second wife, Hannah (Gaffney).   It's difficult to read, but the other members of the household were James H,  William P, Jason Rust, Catherine, all children of Henry and his first wife, Olive (Jacobs).

The three Emery's listed between James H and William P are illegible, though one looks like Amanda, who may have been a wife of one of the children (as I have not come across an Amanda born to Henry and Olive), the other two are difficult to figure out as the ages don't match up to what I have for Henry's children.

James H is listed as a teacher, though Frederic B. Emery wrote in his book "Conrad Emery and His Descendants", that James was a physician.








































The Emery family was living in the town of Weller, Henry County, Illinois, having moved from Canton in Fuller County, Illinois, sometime after the 1850 Census.
